Couldn't resist sharing a little Wolfe and a few photos of Timmy from my Instagram enjoying our pumpkins as October and this festive day comes to an end...
While I've gone pumpkin-picking with friends back in Pennsylvania for a couple of years now it's been awhile since I actually carved a pumpkin--they look quite festive without any embellishment and if I did back any alterations it was usually just cutting a hole in the top to steal the seeds for baking. Everything has been feeling marvelously Halloween-festive lately though and I finally carved a pumpkin with a face; I went the traditional route and since a four-year-old voted my pumpkin the best I get to feel superior to the other pumpkin-carvers...There will definitely be more carving and perhaps a little seed eating tonight along with piles of candy because when you're an adult you don't have to troll through neighborhoods in hopes of a few candy bars but can buy as many as you want at the store. One of the few perks of adulthood (then comes the dentist bill)...
I passed on these nail decals while shopping last week and today I'm regretting it--I mean, there are only a few times a year when you can really get away with silly faces on your nails...
Photographer Nick Brandt poses naturally mummified animals that wash up along the shore of Lake Natron in this series of eerie images. The lake is a harsh environment and for some reason many birds or bats crash into it and are killed when they hit the water. Then the lake's high salt content coats the corpses in sodium carbonate preserving them along the water's edge. Brandt certainly had an eye for the dramatic when he posed them on the highly reflective lake or framed a bat with thorns--it's a spooky set that adds to the lake's mystique. via
Halloween has never been a major holiday on my radar. As a kid I was often excited about the prospect of free candy in quantities beyond my imaging but aside from the year I went as a birthday cake costumes were often an afterthought or hand-me-down and I recall finding all the walking around the neighborhood a bit too cold to be exciting. As an adult the Halloween parties I attend are still few and far between and while sometimes I think it'd be fun to dress up as Ash (from Fantastic Mr Fox) ultimately I procrastinate and putting together a costume ends up feeling too time-consuming to be worthwhile. Still, in recent years I've done my fair share of pumpkin picking, carving, and eating and there's a little bit of the Halloween spirit in all that, that is rubbing off on me. Anyway, I was initially drawn to this dress since it's not a typical silhouette and it looked like it would travel well, the on-theme colors are just a plus today. Also, will it start to be strange if I keep wearing this barrette past Halloween..?
Free People's October catalogue took literal inspiration from Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation and inspires the same sort of wanderlust. While I would have enjoyed a little more model Eimi Kuroda and a little less blonde Elsa Hosk looking out of sync with her surroundings the shots are still beautiful and I enjoy every editorial giving me a peek at Tokyo...
French label Sessun always creates wearable, yet wonderfully covetable collections in beautiful palettes. Their clothes always seem to capture that "French chic" look that is not exclusive to French women, but consists of looking classic and effortless while wearing modern pieces and perhaps secretly trying really, really hard. This season they're making me covet some cropped trousers (which are highly unrecommended for anyone of my petite stature) and the most beautiful jewel tones--where can I get something in that deep jade, hm?
These oversized weeds remind me of Jumanji--specifically the carnivorous plants in that movie that attempt to eat humans with rather fevered relish. You'd think the photosynthesizing things hadn't seen a decent meal in years. These plants hardly devour adults, but they do have a bite. Giant hogweed (as I'm told this plant is) is similar to poison ivy; contact with skin can cause a painful rash...something I was wholly aware and paranoid of as I climbed among the oversized leaves and spiked stems. My self-preservation instincts often come second place to my drive for a good picture, so I braved the rain, crawled under leaves, sat beneath their canopy and hoped that my layers would protect me from the apparently poisonous sap so I could momentarily look like Thumbelina...
