Skateland

I'm a big fan of vintage advertisements and retro lettering, so I can't get enough of these vintage roller rink labels shared on Letterology. These were printed from the 1940s to the 1960s as advertising labels to cover skate cases. I never really liked roller skating at the rink birthday parties I did attend, but these make me want to go try again...

Hidden Manifest

Colorful smoke bombs transform otherwise stark scenes in Filippo Minelli's photography. While winter traditionally strips the world of color, his works inject unreal neons into barren landscapes. His pieces are about decontextualization and juxtapositions, in his own words, "Showing the power of nature with the implication of religious aspects. Juxtaposing violence and beauty as a political statement. Giving silence a physical shape to be aware of its presence in the age of information and communication technology. "

Kissimmee

After a long day of traveling I'm working my way back up the east coast towards my home of Pennsylvania with a brief stop-over in Virginia with my parents. Rather too tired to conceive a clever post at the moment, so I hope you enjoy these more relaxing photographs I took while in Florida "catching the rays" (ironic since I feel paler leaving than I did going--must be the comparison to the locals).
P.S. Post title has no relation to my actual location while on the peninsula but rather a simple predilection for the name.

Face In The Crowd

Hopefully you didn't spend today facing the crowds for Black Friday but if you did (I hope you got what you went out for!) perhaps you can relate to this series of photographs by Alex Prager aptly titled "Face in the Crowd." The work is for her first solo exhibition now on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art based on the psychology of crowds. The large format prints (and short film featuring Elizabeth Banks) are rich with Prager's signature palette of retro hues and featuring impeccably costumed characters. The dramatic and seemingly stolen moments were elaborately staged in near movie-making conditions. Prager's own words on the project, "It just got me thinking about the two sides of a crowd. It can be a massive sea of strangers that become this anonymous cloud in your way. Or it can be all hundreds of beautiful special little individuals with their own experiential tracks. I mean, it’s very obvious that that’s what a crowd is but when you dig into that and look for that, it’s really beautiful."

Style Crush: Louise

My first blogger style crush happened before she was a blogger--Louise now of Miss Pandora was a street style favorite in Paris long before she started a blog. I (and others) wrote posts admiring her style and wondering who the mysterious Louise was. A few months after she captured street style photographers eye she started her own blog and now we can all more easily stalk her across the Interwebs. It's been years since I first started following her blog and I'm still a big fan of her personal style.

Southern Hospitality

As I mentioned earlier I'm enjoying a brief respite from the cold in the "jungles" of Florida. Only a few days down south in the last week of November, but I'm already covered in mosquito bites. On the plus side once I'm back home no one will be able to see them under the copious amount of layers I will no doubt be wearing...

Sometimes you just want to go dancing. Love the feel of this editorial from Vogue Germany 2008 photographed by Phil Poynter.

Happy Thanksgiving!

These pictures were taken shortly before I boarded a plane with my parents on our way to Florida so we could enjoy Thanksgiving with my sister who lives there. As we get older and more scattered it becomes harder and harder to spend holidays together (my other sister is away from us today in Kansas). Of course I'm not complaining about the displacement since it means at this moment instead of enduring a wintry mix in Pennsylvania I'm enjoying bare legs and sunshine in Florida, quite the change! A layered look like this is much more typical of what I'm in this season; I even wear multiple pairs of tights and a cotton slip in hopes a slight added bit of warmth...
