Do Hymn An Autumn Sound

I've been dreaming about this Family Affairs dress since I saw it last spring. Needless to say when it arrived in the mail it went directly from the bag to my back without a pause for ironing. I'll get around to that before I wear it next time. The weekend was too lovely to spend time indoors ironing, especially if we have snow next weekend (as some have predicted!).

"Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn an autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them—
The summer flowers depart—
Sit still—
as all transform’d to stone,
Except your musing heart.
How there you sat in summer-time,
May yet be in your mind;
And how you heard the green woods sing
Beneath the freshening wind.
Though the same wind now blows around,
You would its blast recall; For every breath that stirs the trees,
Doth cause a leaf to fall..."

Sunday Remix

1 / 2 / 3 / 4
My favorite throw-it-on-and-go fall jacket is definitely this varsity one. It's just the perfect amount of warmth on a brisk fall day without being too much. I also like to think the "W" on the front stands for winner! Anyway, mine is by H&M, but a few years old so the most comparable one I've found is on Forever 21 (and this one is a bit different but I want it). One of my biggest inspirations for getting a letterman jacket was Kate Foley--I love the way she pairs hers with gossamer dresses. My pairings haven't always been so inspired, other than to go full school-theme with my saddle shoes...

Moving Sale Part II

My huge moving sale is still going on! This past week was a bit crazy as I mailed out packages and measured and listed new items. Now there's a selection of gently used shoes (size 7-7.5) and a mix of vintage and indie designer pieces (Orla Kiely, Lauren Moffatt, etc) with everything else. The bulk of what I'm getting rid of has now been listed, so check it out now because the shop won't be open for too much longer. Thanks!

Style Crush: Valentina

Eclectic, colorful, but never trying too hard is how I would describe Valentina Siragusa's style. She runs the blog Factory Style, but is best known for her street style photographs as she's very popular with Vanessa Jackman and Stockholm Street Style. I really enjoy her playful, yet sophisticated approach to fashion--she wears luxe pieces so well in brocade coats fit for royalty, but looks equally at ease in mixed prints and a straw boater hat. There is a sense of exaggeration to her looks; she might wear a white blouse & plaid skirt but the blouse imitates Edwardian styles and the skirt is paired with leopard print heels. With her eye-catching ensembles it's easy to see why she's snapped so often at fashion week.

Layer Up

It's been looking like fall for awhile, but the temperatures are only now starting to catch up with the season. A few days ago I could get away with only a light jacket, but I'm officially starting my serious layering and hunting up all the gloves and mittens I can find. Today I decided to layer a cozy sweater dress under a skirt. Maybe another day I'll wear the dress by itself, but I like the versatility of pieces like this and it's hard to abandon my favorite silhouette. Anyway, I've got a busy day ahead so I'll keep this brief. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Chicwish Giveaway

chic1chic
I've been working with Chicwish and wearing their clothes for several years now--I think I got my first item from them back in 2011 and I'm consistently impressed with their quality. This summer I fell in love with some of their delicate embroidered dresses and now I'm eyeing their cozy sweaters. If you like the shop as much as I do you're in luck because today I partnered with Chicwish to bring you a giveaway! In one week we are drawing one winner at random to receive $100 to spend at Chicwish. Enter using the Rafflecopter widget below.

Burger Queen

I try to cook most of my meals at home because it's cheaper and more healthy, but man do I love my junk food. I only get a burger and fries maybe once a week, but they taste so good! My friends tease me because I'd usually rather eat at Burger King than a fancy restaurant, but I'm addicted to their fries. Ironically as a child I rarely ate fast food. My sisters and I used to see McDonalds' ads on the television and we'd beg our parents to take us but they always refused. Eventually one day they gave in and we got our much coveted Happy Meals and we actually hated them! My tastebuds have definitely changed since then and probably not for the better. Anyway, I was this close to buying a purse in the shape of fries but ultimately resisted because the shape was too similar to my popcorn purse. Still even with that minor resistance I have amassed a small collection of junk food related clothing...

Society 6 Special Discount

Did you know you can buy some of my collage work in the form of tote bags, tees, and even clocks? I'm thinking of adding some of my best nature photographs to my Society 6 page too, but ideally I'd love to open my own shop and sell things directly! Anyway, until that day you can get $5 off your order and free worldwide shipping if you use this link. Offer ends November 9th at midnight!

I'm Not Confused, I'm Well Mixed

I used to wear a lot more mixed prints in college and even wrote a few articles offering tips on how to wear them for various websites, but I haven't worn the style much lately. It isn't a conscious decision, I think my more minimalist tendencies have just come out more through the years. I'm trying to get a better lock on my style lately--well, more than usual. I mean style is this constantly evolving target; as soon as you start to figure out how you like to look some aspect of your life changes and you need to adjust. You suddenly feel "too old" for certain pieces or all those pretty blouses you had for your office job feel too stuffy in a new creative position. I've hung on to many pieces for sentimental reasons or because they were in good condition and now I'm having to think very hard if they're worth paying to move across an ocean...It's a good thing I've moved around often enough that clothes are my main concern. I have no big pieces of furniture or loads of knick-knacks to pack up--just books, vintage magazines, and loads of dresses!

Heinui F/W 2014

Since I'm wearing an old Heinui dress in this morning's post it seems like an appropriate time to look at Heinui's latest collection. As with previous seasons it's all about killer details like buttons that resemble screws, sailor collars, and beautiful embroidery. The collection is titled "Makers" and you can see busy hands at work tying knots on the front of smocks and printed all over delicate silk. It's becoming a mantra for me, but I love how the collection manages to be classic without being boring--these are pieces you can wear this season and for many to come.

Indigo Girl

I've had this dress by Heinui since the summer, but since it's made out of a lovely thick material I had to wait for cooler months to wear it. Sometimes people wonder how I wear dresses in chilly, even snowy weather, but not all dresses are created equal! Neither are tights for that matter, I always stock up the highest denier tights I can find for extra thickness and if I'm not layering underneath my dresses I look for ones with longer sleeves and warmer fabrics. This dress was definitely made to be worn when it cools off and the interesting waist detail and bow back make it far from your average shirtdress. For some reason when wearing it I feel as if I should be in the kitchen making apple pies...although I've never even made an apple pie.
