In 1947 LIFE magazine ran this series on the then-new trend of picture printed fabric. The trend is still going strong today, although wearing your own face on your dress never really seemed to take off. Each season we still see new interpretations of fabric printing from the MSGM sweatshirt everyone's gaga for or Mary Karantzou's use of trompe l'oeil every season. It's really interesting to see some of the first innovations of this technique compared to its use today. Also, to look at this article consider how our own current "new" technologies in fashion or other fields will appear dated in 60 years or so. Anyway, I got a kick out of these images and couldn't resist sharing--seriously how great is that dress in the first photograph? I think a modern "sweet sixteen" version needs to exist for some daddy's girl out there...
