It's just the perfect amount of warmth on a brisk fall day without being too much. I also like to think the "W" on the front stands for winner! Anyway, mine is by H&M, but a few years old so the most comparable one I've found is on <a href="http://rstyle.me/n/qa6g6hu7e" target="_blank">Forever 21</a> (and <a href="http://rstyle.me/n/siv8shu7e" target="_blank">this one</a> is a bit different but I want it). One of my biggest inspirations for getting a letterman jacket was <a href="http://theclothes.blogspot.com/2014/09/style-crush-kate-foley.html" target="_blank">Kate Foley</a>--I love the way she pairs hers with gossamer dresses. Every time I wear this dress I talk about how it's one of my favorite pieces, but this time I think the pictures are the best evidence (just look at that hair evolution--too bad I didn't wear it when I was briefly blonde & pink!). It is just an incredibly versatile piece and although it's only a cheap one from ASOS it's holding up beautifully. It always succeeds in making me feel fall ready when I move it to the front of my closet and start planning outfits around it. As I said in <a href="http://theclothes.blogspot.com/2014/10/i-saw-old-autumn.html" target="_blank">my most recent post</a> wearing it--I'll keep wearing my favorite pieces until they fall apart but I try to focus on new details and small accessories each season that help make the old seem fresh. There's a reason I wear a lot of dresses and it has as much to do with my struggle to find good tops as it does with my love for dresses themselves! Too many blouses today are so sheer they require thought in your undergarments, or run far too long for petite torsos, or are so blousey they look ridiculous tucked into fitted skirts or other bottoms. So yeah, I have a long list of complaints about blouses and rarely find one I like. This shirt which I've had since 2012 is definitely an exception. I love the all over script print, fit, and the variety of ways I can wear it. Still, being tired of wearing it never made me want to get rid of it so it stayed in my closet and went along with me in each move (hard to believe I've lived in four different homes and two states since 2012!) and is finally being worn again. I usually try to get rid of pieces I haven't worn in over a year, but vintage dresses are always my exception. My most worn trench coat is a classic tan one, but I always have multiples in my closet. It has a beautiful full skirt to it that works well with dresses and it has a lot of pretty details throughout--like little bows on the shoulders. I actually got this one by Cheap Monday for free as a promotion with their more expensive jeans, but years later it's the tee shirt that I keep wearing while the jeans are gone (to be fair though I ended up ripping the jeans climbing a fence otherwise they might still be getting worn). There's just something so simple about the bold graphic on white that ends up going with everything. Thomas has already seen it so many times he says, "that shirt again?" every time it comes out. I think everyone ends up having their own, unique basics; for example white button-downs and black trousers barely get any wear in my closet. Even when I briefly worked as a secretary my blouses were more colorful and a knee-length skirt was always preferable to trousers. One constant basic in my wardrobe is a trench coat. I usually own several in different colors and patterns (one of my favorites right now <a href="http://theclothes.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-books-were-true.html" target="_blank">is this green one</a>), but this khaki-toned trench is my most worn style. It's from ASOS a couple of years ago, but they still have <a href="http://rstyle.me/n/pk53whu7e" target="_blank">similar styles</a> available. There's just something about a red dress that I can't resist, even if most of mine end up hanging on my walls instead of my body. One favorite which has gotten a lot of wear since I first got it back in 2011, is this sailor-inspired Rachel Antonoff number. It works best at the beach on a summer's day, but I have styled it in the fall before layered over tights with a trench coat. Different season, different hair, different countries, but the same dress and the same me. In winter I played up the brightness of the dress with a vivid orange, vintage coat and in summer I kept the focus on the dress with minimal black accessories. I do move certain items like coats and heavy sweaters to my basement in the summer, or in the winter my flimsiest dresses with tropical prints, but most of my closet I treat like the dress above: multi-seasonal. It's all in how you style it. Even if the bright pink and orange combination doesn't seem very "wintry" in appearance, it is in functionality. Other times they feel like the only good thing that came out of a trip! This vintage cardigan might fall into the latter category. I bought it after a trip to Boston with friends; it wasn't a completely disastrous journey but enough things went wrong that I was quite glad to be heading home by the end of it. Even the smallest sizes can be loose and nearly all of them can double as tunic tops for someone of my height (5'1"). So, I'm quite excited for this 90s revival of fitted tees and crop tops because I'm finally finding shirts I can wear comfortably. Since it's basic black and white you can pair a lot of colors with it, but I tend to focus more on mixing prints or changing the way you style it--like a leather jacket and heels for an evening look, or a long cardigan and scarf for a more casual approach.
